That Time I...
Camped in an Extinct Ice Volcano at the Fourteen Mile Point Lighthouse

Many moons ago I made tracks for the abandoned Fourteen Mile Point Lighthouse for a remote winter camping trip. The hike in was easy as I trekked along the frozen shoreline. No elevation gain = no problem! Snowmobiles also can make the journey if the ice is safe enough, which this year it was. Exploring the privately owned ruins in winter was a neat contrast to the semi-jungle the site is in summer.
I had intended to sleep in a tent this trip but discovered an extinct ice volcano a ways off shore that had split open to reveal a perfect sleeping chamber inside! I leveled it out and built a half-assed snow wall in the front to block the wind and keep in a little heat. Ta-da, a shelter! The ice and snow walls did a great job of cocooning me overnight. I've always dreamed of fidning a similar home on a future trip but so far haven't ever gotten so lucky.
