That Time I...

Paddled to the Huron Islands in the Dark for Sunrise

In my heyday of dumb offshore adventures, I decided it'd be a great idea to paddle to the Huron Islands.  "That's not so dumb," you may be thinking.  "Avid paddlers make the four-mile crossing all the time!"  True, but they usually don't do it solo, and not in the dark to catch the sunrise from the island.

And so I set out into the pre-dawn darkness, aiming straight for the island.  Fortunately for me, I knew exactly where I was going.  All I had to do was follow the light from the lighthouse!  I was making decent time, but knew it was going to be close.  Once I reached the dock on the island, I raced up the stairs in a full sprint.  With literally one minute to spare, I scored some epic pictures of the sunrise as it shone on the lighthouse and surrounding rugged terrain.  It was awesome.

I'd never been here before, so once the golden hour was through I gathered some snacks and other gear and set off exploring.  You're not allowed to camp on the Huron Islands which is why catching the sunrise here is so difficult.  I explored the ruins of successive generations of lighthouses and wandered the windswept rock outcrops from above.  It's a really neat place to check out!  Once I'd gotten my fill, I paddled back to shore with a decent tailwind helping my tired arms.  Success!
