That Time I...

Got Locked in With Ice While Winter Lake Camping

I like pushing the envelope with my paddling adventures, whether that's on Misery Paddle Tours or checking out swampy lakes.  An early-winter camping trip on Echo Lake is one such misadventure.  I recruited adventure pal Kurt for one last paddle trip of the year to check out this small lake in the Ottawa National Forest, which had decent access to plowed roads before things really got buried.  We managed to drive relatively close and were delighted to find (mostly) open water.  We're in it now!

Camping wasn't too crazy or anything, but by morning the lake had frozen over quite a lot more than when we had arrived.  Our little 9'-10' kayaks were ill-suited for ice breaking and struggled to make headway through the new ice.  This was my first experience paddling in ice and was excited for the challenge.  Eventually we made it out of there and decided that maybe paddling in November has its limits.
