That Time I...

Built a Snow Hole at the Hacking Site

I've camped at the Hacking Site many times over the years.  It's a beautiful spot with the biggest views in the Ottawa National Forest and the westernmost terminus of the 5-miles of the North Country Trail I care for, which makes me a regular to this vaunted spot.  In the winter of 2022, I challenged myself to a fun adventure: build a snow hole to camp in!

So that's what I did.  I'd learned after my Norwich snow hole adventure to make the roof a little higher this time to avoid craning my neck too much.  I'm still figuring out doors though.  It's tough to make a door that seals up well to avoid letting in too much cold air in the night, without suffocating yourself in the process.

The views, as usual, were incredible.  It was fairly warm inside my little adobe, at least compared to sleeping out in the open or in a tent.  Was it worth a couple hours of work?  Sure!  Just make sure you find a deep enough drift of snow to start with or you'll be hauling in way more snow that you'd like.
