Winter Camped at Sturgeon River Falls

Getting to Sturgeon River Falls in the middle of winter is usually a tough task. Located in the middle of the Wilderness, none of the roads are plowed in the area. They are open for snowmobiling though, which means they're groomed and work well for hiking on too!
In January 2021 I hiked for several miles to access this remote (in winter) waterfall. It was blastin' and beautiful like always. The scenery was great, with ice formations all over the adjacent gorge walls. Snowshoes were required off of the groomed snowmobile trail, a key piece of equipment most motorized users forget to bring. Some poor souls tried to hike down without 'em and quickly turned around when the post-holing got to be too much.
After checking out the falls, I hiked to the top of the cliff just downstream to set up camp. The view of the rapids below is fantastic from this elevated perch no matter the season. I highly recommend it!
